Track Info
The 1/4 mile track originally opened for racing on May 1st, 1947 as a dirt oval. The
second season saw the greatest dirt oval competitors in history competing at the
facility. Bill Vukovich, Roger Ward, Jimmy Bryan and Troy Ruttman were
routinely found racing at the track. All four would go on to win the Indy 500 at
least once. Other future Indy winners who ran the track included Bobby Unser, AJ Foyt,
Rick Mears and Parnelli Jones.
In 1964, the track was paved and relaunched as a paved oval on April 5th in
1964.
At the end of the 2011 racing season, track management announced that there
would be no racing for the 2012 season.
A press release from the Dirt Entertainment group surprised the racing
community on November 14th 2012 by announcing that the track would reopen
for the 2013 season with a clay track surface. According to the press release, the track
“will be re-opened at the end of 2012 for one final race as a pavement facility,
to keep the streak of continued racing at the historic quarter mile oval alive
in the record books.”
After the final 2012 race, the track will be redesigned with a clay racing
surface and relaunched for a full racing season in 2013.
